Acknowledging the Waffle Maker Patent: Annual Shout Out to the Swartwout

August 24, 2013

What would all of our delicious vegan waffle recipes be if no one had ever designed the waffle maker? Either batter, or relatively flat pancakes. We would live in a very, very different world indeed.

While some believe that devices akin to a waffle maker existed elsewhere in the world prior to this date, Cornelius Swartwout patented the first U.S. waffle iron on August 24, 1869. This might be through consuming a tasty vegan waffle, or skipping down the sidewalks of your street in an ecstatic frenzy.
